Shari's Cafe and Pies in San Bruno is a straightforward family-style restaurant serving classic American breakfast, brunch, and lunch fare with a heavy emphasis on pies. Located just off the freeway, it draws in a steady local crowd looking for reliable comfort food in a relaxed environment. The interior has a slightly dated, well-worn charm—think early ’90s diner meets cozy neighborhood spot—which can feel a bit chilly but also familiar. Seating by the windows offers views of the nearby freeway and cemetery, adding a quiet, almost contemplative backdrop to your meal.

This place works well for casual weekend brunches or a hearty lunch break. Their menu highlights include country fried steak and eggs, fish & chips, and a variety of sandwiches, but the real draw tends to be their selection of pies. From banana cream and lemon meringue to regional flavors like Marionberry Cheese Pie, the pies are consistently praised for freshness and flavor. On Wednesdays, visitors often take advantage of a free slice of pie with their meal, although the spot can get busy then, so weekday brunches might be a quieter alternative.

The service is generally approachable and friendly, though at peak times it can slow down noticeably—typical of busy family diners. The restaurant maintains a clean, if no-frills, setting that suits its practical appeal. Shari’s fits into the local fabric as a dependable place where families, friends, and solo diners can enjoy a warm meal and satisfying dessert without fuss.

Good to know:

  • Best for those seeking classic American diner fare with a pie-focused twist.
  • Weekday brunch visits tend to offer a more relaxed experience than busy weekend afternoons or Wednesday pie specials.
  • Friendly, if occasionally rushed, service reflects the steady flow of local regulars.
  • Not ideal for those seeking a trendy or modern aesthetic but appealing to nostalgia and straightforward comfort food.

Food is always delicious, and not too expensive. If you go on Wednesdays, you get a free slice of pie with your meal. But remember, it might be busy. I tend to go on weekdays during brunch. A lot less people. If you sit by the windows, you get a nice view of the freeway and cemetery. Service is great most of the time. Depends how busy they are. If it’s a full house, don’t expect amazing service. But when you go during the non peak hours, they are very attentive. I tend to drink a lot of water, so it’s nice when they refill it without me trying to flag someone down. Atmosphere is nice. Very old school diner feel. Last time we were there, we noticed how bad the seats were in all the booths. They were ripped up and the cushions were spilling out. It was very unattractive and made us not want to sit by the windows. I hope they get them all fixed rather than putting red tape over it.

I recently went to Shari’s Cafe with a friend for brunch. We were pleasantly surprised how cute it was inside. We were seated at a booth near the window and had a great view. The staff were very friendly and very attentive. The prices were reasonable and the food was good. The pies looked delicious but we were too full to give them a try. We plan to go back again for dessert. I highly recommend Shari’s Cafe & Pies.

I've been to a couple Shari's locations, mostly up in the northern parts of California and have always had a positive experience and impression. This particular spot was no different and in fact, have not enjoyed a Shari's more than this one location. The premises are great, yeah, a bit dated, but clean and the views from here are spectacular. It is an easy on & off place from the freeway in a not too congested part of town. The service was spot on and the food that me and my buddy had was good. Seriously, there was nothing to complain about. And so to those who expected more from a chain restaurant, I don't know what you were envisioning, but I think you'd have to recalibrate your expectations. These folks did a great job with our food, efficient service and providing a good atmosphere. I'd definitely put this place on my regular rotation now that my friend introduced me to it. So here's a solid 4-star rating. Good luck Shari's and my best hopes for your continued success.

Great food and amazing pies! Shari’s is always a solid spot for a good meal. The service is friendly, the food comes out hot, and everything tastes fresh. The pies are the best part—super delicious and worth stopping in for every time. A cozy, dependable place for breakfast, lunch, or dessert!

First time coming to this place. From the outside it looks like a creepy scene from Stranger Things. Inside felt like we jumped out of Doc Brown's DeLorean and right into 1989. The place had an old wood smell and it was really cold. There was 2 small groups there, a young group of 3 and an older group of 3. The waitress was an older Asian lady and she was extremely kind and sweet. The food wasnt bad considering everything else. The food was also priced well. We wanted to get pie but wasnt sure how long its been sitting there. Would definitely be a place to go if I ever wanna do a Mob style meet up lol. But seriously, over it was cool.
